Set Up Your First Split URL Experiment

Create a Brand New Experiment from Scratch

Setting up a split URL experiment is great for those that have two alternative pages ready and just want to divide the traffic random over these pages and measure which page is the best for their audience.

Step 1: Create a New Experience

In your Experiment Dashboard you with find the "New Experience" text in the top right that indicates you can make a new experience (see screenshot below).

Step 2: Select Split URL Experiment

There are 4 experience types which you can select for this split URL experiment. Select the second one (see screenshot below):

Step 3: Add Variations

By default we added your main URL as the original in the wizard, the variation on the right hand side you need to add yourself.

You can give a name to each variation and using the (plus) icon in the top you can add more than one variation.

The traffic will be split evenly over your original and all your variations. In the example below (see screenshot) you see we use "index2.html" as the variation and added the full URL in the URL field.

Step 4: Need Regular Expressions (Optional)?

If you use Google Adwords or any other system that passes variables to your site that you want to keep, consider adding turning on variables with the option "Turn on Variables" (see screenshot below)

What this does is create a regular expression. Simply explained it adds the following code behind the original:

and to the variation it adds $1. To explain in non technical format what this does... this regular expressions takes everything that is behind a question mark and pastes it in the variation on the spot where the $1 sign is.

Step 5: Verify Audience

When you click Save you will be going to the Experiment Summary next. Verify the Audience and check if this is the audience you want to setup. If not specify it going to its configuration.

Step 6: Verify Goals

In this same Experience Summary you can change a lot, but to focus on the basics we just verify that goals are setup well (see screenshot below).

Step 7: Add the domains to the Project Settings

If your new variation URL domain is different from the original, you will need to add it to the Project Settings. All the different domains that include your variations URLs need to be added.

To do this, click on "Settings" in the left panel:

Then click in the "+" button, in the "Active Websites" Section:

Lastly write the second domain URL, and save it by clicking the "Add website" button".

Step 8: Launch Experiment

Don't forget you need to add the code to the header of your site. See this article to read instructions on how to do it

  • If you want to do a split test for many pages of your site for example product pages or for a new site, read this article.

Now launch your test by activating it by clicking the bottom right button (see screenshot below), then you are going to achieve an activated experiment.
